Ireland’s first Grand Slam since 1948 was almost thrown away by late second half schoolboy errors in Cardiff, not worthy of the manner in which the Irish came out at the start of the second half. As usual the excellent and tenacious Brian O’Driscoll lead from the front at the Millennium Stadium, leading the Irish to their first Grand Slam for 52 years. His try changed the momentum of the game and put Wales on the back foot.
Tommy Bone’s individual try for Ireland set up Ireland for a long overdue Grand Slam and helped write Brian O’Driscoll and his Irish Rugby Union team into the history books. Ireland almost threw a winning position away with silly penalties and errors, especially when Stephen Jones drop goal gave Wales a 15-14 lead with 5 minutes remaining on the clock.
Nevertheless, Ronan O’Gara’s drop goal with two minutes to go won the match 17-15, Six Nations Championship and Grand Slam for Ireland, but only just, as had Stephen Jones last kick of the game penalty gone over, Wales would have won the Triple Crown and this marvellously entertaining International Rugby match, denying Ireland the Grand Slam.
A thrilling end to a enthralling Six Nations decider, and certainly one than all the long suffering Irish fans will not forget. My congratulations to Ireland’s Captain Brian O’Driscoll and all the Irish team for the success they deserve after so many near misses. As Lewis Hamilton proved during the F1 title decider in Brazil last year, last minute last gasp championship wins are still a win, and the history books will always record him as World Champion, the margin of victory in the end only relevant if you were watching at the time. Ireland will always be Grand Slam Champions of 2009, but having watched the final kick of the game at the Millennium Stadium fall yards short of the uprights, and Lewis Hamilton’s one point victory in Sao Paulo, I will not forget how close both these Championship wins were.

“We all want to live greener, better lives, but few of us plan on forsaking the comfort and aesthetics of our period homes, built decades before anyone worried about their effect on the planet, for a new zero-carbon property. So, what can you do to your semi, terrace or cottage to go green and save money?
That was the challenge British Gas put to 64 households last year, with the launch on these pages. Over the past 12 months, eight families on eight roads – all of them with “Green” in their address – have been trying every which way to reduce their energy consumption in a bid to be named the greenest street in the country.” (Cherry Maslen, Times Online, From the Sunday Times, 1st March 2009)
Find out how they got on. The article concludes by giving some examples of the sort of thing householders can do who are genuine about wanting to save money by saving energy and cutting costs.
“In an uninsulated home, £1 in every £3 spent on heating is wasted. Installing loft insulation could save £110 a year on bills; cavity-wall insulation could save £90.
As a rule, the older your boiler, the more inefficient it will be. A new high-efficiency condensing boiler with heating controls (prices start at about £2,000) could save £200 a year on bills.
Turning down your heating thermostat by 1C can cut bills by 10%. Fit thermostats to radiators to control room temperatures.
Turn off lights in rooms you’re not using – lighting accounts for up to 15% of domestic electricity bills.
Double glazing cuts heat loss and reduces noise and condensation problems. Expect savings of £90 a year on bills.”

Hazlemere Windows exhibited demonstration samples of their “A” rated aluminium window and launched the new addition to their range, a UPVC “A” rated energy saving window at this energy saving exhibition in High Wycombe.

Home ownership in the UK comes with regular financial responsibilities which include council tax, TV licence, insurances, maintenance, water rates, gas, electricity and telephone/broadband etc. Most of these costs are hard to avoid, some can be drastically reduced with a little planning.
If you are planning on buying a new house or home improvement, if is worth thinking what you can do to prepare your home for the future. For example, consider installing double glazing to reduce heating costs. A single panel of glass offers poor insulation as glass is a conductor of heat and heat is able to escape out of a window. In contrast with double glazing a layer of air is trapped between two panes of glass forming a near perfect blanket of insulation that keeps heat indoors. Warm in winter and cool in summer, homes with double glazing enjoy reduced power consumption, condensation and noise.
The quest to cut costs continues with solar heating. Solar power is considered a clean green method of energy, which makes use of a natural resource and is free of harmful contaminants. Virtually inexhaustible, solar energy can be used to power a wide range of items, from household essentials to outdoor lighting.
Solar energy is captured in two distinctive ways: 1) solar water-heating systems where water is heated by the sun as it passes through metal envelopes or 2) through photovoltaic conversion of radiant energy to electricity which creates energy to replace standard forms of power like electricity or gas that are commonly used energy sources to power a home.
During summer a solar water-heater can produce sufficient energy for an average three to four person family. In cooler weather a solar panel will continue to provide hot water but may need to be backed-up a small amount of conventional heating. Conventional electric water-heating systems contribute to around 40% of an average household energy bill. Replacing electric water-heating with solar power means households use considerably less non-renewable fossil fuels.
While investing in double glazing and a solar panel can be wise options, never under estimate the need for insulation. Good quality insulation reduces the rate of heat loss though ceilings, walls and floors making it easier and more cost effective to keep a home warm in winter and cool in summer.
Insulation comes in a wide variety of forms which include polyester, fibreglass, wool and other composite materials. From loose fill, which is pumped into ceilings, biscuits which are pre-cut pieces, and blankets which are available in long rolls, the types of insulation available are often as diverse as the materials they are made from.
Insulation works by slowing the rate of heat which flows through ceilings, walls, floors, and windows. Insulation effectiveness is measured by R values. The higher an insulation products R value is the stronger its ability is to slow down the transfer of heat. To ensure a home is properly insulated, identify which areas need insulation. In most homes the cavity between the ceiling and roof, under floors and walls create the most effective places for insulation to be used.
While many of the costs involved with running a home are hard to avoid, forward planning and initial investment can drastically reduce your long term costs if you properly prepare your house for the future.
