Hazlemere Commercial’s home improvement work is featured in Grand Design Magazine

Hazlemere Commercial’s homeimprovement is featured in the September 2008 edition of the popular Grand Designs Magazine. This article follows our involvement in the glazing of a stunningly contemporary copper-roofed, decagon-shaped house in Oxford, which was also featured in Channel 4’s Grand Designs TV series in January 2008.

The house was built for Henry Chopping, a commercial surveyor. The window company he chose for the project had to ensure quality as well as sustainability. Henry comments: "This building is an infant right now. In 300 years it’ll just be getting into its stride. The fact that I’ve built something that will look better as time goes on is really important to me." (Grand Designs Magazine, September 2008, P.70)

The author of the six page Grand Designs feature, Fiona McAuslan, remarks upon some of the reasoning behind Henry’s choices: "He does admit that when it came to choosing the materials, his personal values were the main priority. Henry is passionate about the importance of good materials and fine craftsmanship, an interest derived from running his family’s property development company."

The Decagon House is builton a rare city site, tucked away behind a listed limestone wall and protectedby English Heritage, so no new structure can be taller than it. Henry was therefore only able to construct a single storey building. With the help of his architect, he came up with an innovative design - a series of interlinking glass decagons. Inspired by Moroccan tents, the design makes the most of the sunshine.

Fiona McAuslan observes inher Grand Design article: "Standing on the raised lawn overlooking the peaked undulations of the copper roof and the fan-like angles of the French windows, you can’t help but be impressed by a building that unfolds over its site with the delicacy of an origami paper sculpture."

Kevin McCloud, the programme’s presenter, followed the build project from start to finish and remarked on the sheer quality of the materials and craftsmanship that went into making this project a reality: "Its rare type of excellence is what makes this house important. The strong and coherent character combined with a slavish devotion to quality, both of design and construction, suggests this is a work of lasting craftsmanship."

When it came to supplying and fitting the most striking features - the windows - it was down to Hazlemere Commercial to do the house proud with their bespoke windows and French doors

Hazlemere window and door manufacturers are listed on page 70 of September 2008 edition Grand Design Magazine as the suppliers of the "Windows and French doors".

30th May 2008 - The Decagon House, Grand Designs

Reynaers and fabricator Hazlemere Windows are experiencing the "Grand Designs effect" after featuring in the popular Channel 4 programme in January. A selection of the company’s products played a key part in creating a highly unusual home for property developer, Henry Chopping.

Henry was keen to build a unique home, specifically designed to his own tastes but as his chosen plot was behind a listed wall in the heart of Oxford, strict planning conditions meant the house could be no more than one storey high. The resultant design, which made the most of the plot and the available light, was a series of glassfronted decagons.

The Decagon House featured on the Channel 4 TV show Grand Designs (which you can see again anytime on Channel 4’s on demand service) was successfully completed to a high standard, with the bespoke windows and doors, supplied and installed by Hazlemere Windows, who fitted bespoke French doors manufactured by Reynaers Aluminium Systems Ltd.

Although none of the suppliers were named on the programme, Reynaers and Hazlemere Windows details were on the Grand Designs website and have enjoyed a surge of enquiries as a result.

Simon Keegan, Commercial Sales Director of Hazlemere Windows, added "It proved an excellent opportunity for us. Not only was it prime-time TV exposure but working in partnership with Reynaers we were able to demonstrate that, whatever the design,we can work with architects to deliver a high quality solution."

Hazlemere were proud to of been involved in the Channel 4 Show, January 2008. Henry Chopping commissioned the manufacture and installation of the aluminium windows and aluminium doors for his Decagon House in Oxford.
