Shortly after moving into Oxfordshire from the Midlands, Hazlemere was contacted by the customer about the feasibility of a 6.5 x 3m replacement of an existing conservatory at their 1950s bungalow. They also notified us of a keenness to incorporate bi-fold doors to improve the garden view.
The rear of the property backs onto farmland with a beautiful view across to a nature reserve known as Wittenham Clumps, which needed consideration within the design. Hazlemere devised a design catering for this and presented a second proposal that would involve remodelling the living space along with the entire floorplan of the bungalow including the master bedroom and bathroom.
Using a solid roof design, this allowed for the creation of a light and airy kitchen and dining area that would flow through to the new living room, making better use of the available space. It resonated with the customer, who identified how it would modernise their kitchen whilst creating a fabulous entertaining space. The designer also re-configured the rooms to ensure a great countryside view from the kitchen, dining and living areas.
Two electronically operated roof vents and glazed panels feature in the solid roof for ventilation and light. Carbon grey roof tiles were chosen to complement the anthracite grey aluminium frames of the new windows and doors.
A large picture window to the left of the conservatory delivers the all-important improved view from the dining/kitchen area, with the slim aluminium bi-fold door maximising light gain and wide aluminium single door enhancing the view from the dressing room and bedroom. To amplify the improved feeling of light and openness, we also vaulted the ceilings in the kitchen area to mimic the angles of the pitch of the roof.
There were design challenges along the way, as there often is with conservatories, but we overcame them all in our determination for the family to have the very best possible outcome. The space is now unrecognisable, with the living areas seamlessly flowing through the open plan.
