Find Your Perfect Front Door: Should You Choose Composite Or UPVC?
Visitors naturally focus in on its look on their approach towards your entrance, with its design, to much degree, defining the overall character of the building, and it’s also fundamental that it keeps it secure.
Replacing your front door needs to be a high priority if it is letting your home down in any of these vital aspects and two of the most standout door options for you to consider are the UPVC door and composite door.
Most of us know UPVC doors well enough, a solution with an insulated steel frame wrapped in un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC), but some won’t be as familiar with composite doors.
What is a composite door?
The clue is in the name, with ‘composite’ referring to something composed of several parts or elements, a hybrid if you like, which a composite door is, being constructed using uPVC, foam, wood, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.
Its convincing wood grain effect makes it very wood-like, but purely in appearance, as the GRP skin ensures that a composite door is considerably more resilient, firmer, and watertight than a traditional timber door could ever be.
Fittingly, the strength of a composite door is one of its strongest assets and they don’t come any tougher or thermally efficient than the composite doors we have here at Hazlemere.
How is a composite door different from a UPVC door?
UPVC doors are built from one sole material, plastic, and a composite door has greater depth i.e. a thicker frame, generally around 44mm as opposed to a UPVC door’s 28mm frame.
There is a cost difference too. Composite doors have a higher price point and do so because of the number of materials utilised in their fabrication.
Just because a UPVC door is cheaper doesn’t make it a lesser product though as it also has outstanding thermal and secure credentials.
How do you maintain and clean a composite or UPVC door?
Fill a bucket with warm soapy water and use it to clean the frame surfaces once every four months – please avoid using solvent based cleaners and abrasive materials.
As a once-yearly task, lubricate the locks, hinges, and, if necessary, the handles and door furniture.
Debris in the threshold and drainage holes of the door should be regularly removed to keep water out of the seals – keep a frequent check on this during periods of bad weather.
Do your house proud and give it a front door that it deserves. Explore our composite and UPVC door options in-store at your nearest Hazlemere showroom.
